Creators’ Reflections
“I was inspired by Dayna McLeod’s contribution immediately before mine that included Hedwig and clips of Trans and LGBTQ rights marches. I decided to do a montage of non-binary and queer performers walking up to accept Tony awards (partly also inspired by the first two non-binary performers to win last weekend). I interspersed these with clips of their award-winning stage numbers. I then added two of my favorite gender-bending film musical performances. I think the intersection of media and live theater is a useful site for the exploration of representation and power – and also I’m just a huge musical theater geek.” (Stephanie Brown)
“Completing the end section of the supercut, it seemed too delicious not to go from beginning with RuPaul to ending with Divine. Thus, my choice of using John Waters’ “Pink Flamingos” was made. Seeing Divine walk with such prowess, self-confidence and power shows that, while queerdom can seem a rather new ideal in many ways, queer heroes have existed for some time (in this case, five decades ago). Additionally, when thinking about “sissying” that walk, there is no one camper, edgier or more of a self-empowered promoter of queerdom in all its forms than John Waters. Illuminating this by cutting right before canine defication for the sake of this supercut seemed the best dedication one could give to either Waters or Divine. They hit all three facets for the supercut, powerfully walking towards camera and through the barriers that Hollywood had in their way, finding their voice through the Midnight Movie movement.” (Aylwyn Napier)
