Creators’ Reflections
“Prompted by the need for a baseline popular song, I started with something I’ve always wanted to do, which is a cut from The Deer Hunter to 10 Things I hate About You. After that, I laid down the full track from Frank Valli and segued into Lauryn Hill for the sheer fun of it. Thereafter, the rules of the game and the creative energy of my colleagues seem to have run a bit at odds, which is always fun too.” (Rob Stone)
“I wanted a simple approach to my contribution, selecting one text; this particular scene (the chess scene) from The Thomas Crown Affair immediately came to my mind when thinking of the theme of ‘sublimated desire’. A little obvious and on-the-nose perhaps, but it’s a great scene. Initially, I tried to cut it using the split-screen structure used elsewhere in the film (particularly in the ‘Go’ sequence in the beginning), which would have allowed for some interesting ways to have the characters desires each other across the frames. However, this proved LOTS of work; instead, I laid down the whole sequence un-cut and was pleasantly surprised to find that it fitted quite neatly with the general flow.” (Richard Langley)
“My contributions were influenced predominantly by the clips that had come before, as I wanted to maintain elements of continuity with my initial transition as well reflect some visual content from the immediately preceding clip. I then consciously re-introduced Heath Ledger in a different role, which I may not have done were he not integral to the curator’s opening clip. The curator’s theme was secondary in my work process – though I certainly considered it and very much hope I still incorporated it appropriately.” (Jemma Saunders)
